Solved Application Story # 35

The Challenge
This naval weapon is used for long range interception of threatening targets. The current missile uses springs to deploy the fins when the missile is fired from its storage canister. The manufacturer of the missile had a supplier for the spring but was now looking for a second source. The material used in this spring is "Beta C" which is the highest strength commercial grade titanium known. Even though this particular titanium was new to Helical, we were willing to learn to fabricate a new product with a new material.
The Solution

Helical was contacted as that alternate supplier. The result was that a product of higher quality was delivered on a timely basis at a competitive price. The missile manufacturer awarded Helical the Outstanding Supplier Award in May 1988. Since then, we remain the primary supplier of these springs, and the Helical Flexure has been designed into other applications. Currently, two spin-off applications are active: (1) on the space station, electrical interface probe, and (2) on chemical industry equipment.
