THE CHALLENGE
The application
called for a 90 degree universal joint on a vacuum chamber conveyor
system. The joint could not cause particles to develop or require
lubrication that would contaminate the product being transported on the
conveyor. Secondly, there was a need for a flexible coupling to be used in
conjunction with the application but not part of the universal joint.
THE SOLUTION
To meet the
requirement of using the proper material in a vacuum atmosphere, 15-5pH
stainless steel was chosen. The HELI-CAL® Flexure was produced from a
single piece of material allowing for 90 degrees angular misalignment
without any moving parts (which eliminates debris from forming). To
develop the proper U-joint with the desired end connections, three samples
were made for the customer to test, evaluate and qualify.
For the flexible
coupling, a standard catalog unit was tested originally but a special end
connection in a turned down hub was required. The final unit was made from
l5-5pH stainless steel as well.
