The customer wanted to absorb shock on an automatic sliding door. The HELI-CAL® Flexure was to act as a flexible coupling transmitting torque and to take up misalignments; plus, be a spring with compression and torsional requirements. The new design was to be as compact as possible and become part of the door. The prior mechanism operating the door was accomplished through hydraulics located in the basement.
Since the customer was working on a new project, the rates required to make the system a soft and smooth operating system were unknown. It was just to start somewhere and adjust from that point. The customer asked to have the first unit with a 1000 LB/in compression spring rate. We supplied them a coupling/spring that was 1.0" OD x 2.0" L with 3 coils. The final design performed and looked much different - .875" OD x 4.625" L with 17 coils. There were two spring rates: Compression 125 LB/in; Torsional 144 LB/in. This progression of development took approximately 2 years and 10 sample variations. Once designed and production started, the customer was always attempting to find a less costly unit that could replace the Helical coupling; however, throughout the life of the patent, they were unable to find a product that gave them the needed life at a lower cost.
