A Helical Representative
visited a customer to assist in solving a problem of connecting a motor to an end
effector
on a light duty industrial robot. The robots are used for silicon wafer handling in
computer chip manufacturing. Standard Helical couplings were initially sampled to the
customer for test and evaluation.
During endurance tests, the customer sent a drawing to Helical which showed interest in
the concept of incorporating the coupling and the end effector into a single unit. The end
effector picks up the flat disks with vacuum suction for manipulation. Larger and heavier
disks required larger end effectors. As a result, a family of special couplings was
needed.
On the small robot a special coupling was designed which
combined the coupling with the end effector into a single piece unit. A HELI-CAL® Flexure
and shaft attachment were specially designed to meet the performance requirements of the
application and minimize expense.
To keep costs down on the heavy duty effectors, they were made separately and are part of
an assembled coupling.
