A manufacturer of office equipment wishing to help
alleviate the "carpal tunnel problem" that is so common in today's work force
was designing an easy method to raise and lower a computer table top. They wanted to allow
people of different heights sitting at the same desk to easily and quickly adjust the
table top height to fit their own needs comfortably.
To accomplish this task a 90 degree universal joint was incorporated between a hand crank
and a lead screw. The customer considered a gearbox but this idea was abandoned due to
cost.
It was necessary to use steel material to give the necessary torque and life required by the customer. 15-5pH was the material chosen for longevity and possible abusive use. The HELI-CAL® Flexure has 17 coils to allow the required 90 degree misalignment.
